GAME OF THRONES Writer Are Working on 5th Prequel Series

GoT-Night-King

HBO is developing a possible Game of Thrones spinoff series, but now EW is reporting that a fifth prequel series in the works, and Game of Thrones co-executive producer Bryan Cogman is writing a drama series follow-up to the fan-favorite show. Cogman worked with George R.R. Martin when the series was in development.

GoT showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are not involved with the prequels, Cogman is arguably the next-best possible option for the show.

Cogman has been with Game of Thrones since season 1 when he started on the production as an assistant to Benioff and Weiss. Cogman has written plenty of great episodes along the way and ranks as the show’s third-most prolific writer.

Martin praised Cogman on his blog, saying:

“‘If [Dan and David] have been the kings of Westeros for these past seven seasons, Bryan Cogman has surely been the Prince of Dragonstone … Bryan’s series will be an adaptation, and one that will thrill most fans of the books, I think, set during a very exciting period of Westerosi history. And I’ll be working with him every step of the way … we could possibly see two or even three make it to the pilot stage, with one series emerging on air in 2019 or 2020.”

In a 2011 interview with Westeros, Cogman explained how he joined the series and described the first time he read A Song of Ice and Fire.

“I immediately fell in love with the book from page one, as most people do. It’s probably the most fun I’ve ever had reading anything. It’s inspired storytelling, that’s all there is to it, and the characters are so rich, the themes are so varied. I love it.”

There is not much information available about the story on any of the new GoT projects except that all of them are set before the events in Game of Thrones and current cast members are not involved with any of the projects.

Game of Thrones season 8 expected to return in late 2018.
