It’s not easy taking a decent photo from an aeroplane window. For one thing, the angle you get depends entirely upon the pilot. For another, you likely only have a good ten seconds before an exasperated member of the cabin crew tells you for the zillionth time to switch off all electronic items! Yet, just occasionally, someone manages to land a shot of rare beauty – whether due to luck, skill or some fortuitous combination of the two. Below are ten of our favourites:
This strangely-angled shot of Vancouver is one most people never experience: it was taken during a rare diversion after trouble at the airport. Right in the background, you can see the clouds just starting to consume the tallest skyscrapers. A haunting little shot.
Looking like the opening credits of a Hayao Miyazaki film, this spectacular cloudbank seems on the verge of swallowing up the universe. The result is a beautiful, somehow melancholy shot that practically reeks of the mysterious.
It looks like an effects shot, but that image is really the shadow of the plane reflected off the clouds below.
That’s Dubai there, looking like a mythical city lost in the clouds. The grain is sadly a bit too high, but the image itself remains striking: an unusual look at one of the world’s great cities.
With the stunning white light seemingly pouring from the clouds, you could be forgiven for thinking this plane was on its way into the afterlife – carrying everyone on board up into the heavens. Instead, it’s just a wonderfully atmospheric picture; a once-in-a-lifetime shot.
Another plane banks away and sails off into the fog. This stunning shot was taken from a seaplane over Alaska and is in equal parts spooky and sublime.
The suburbs of Curitiba lie below this plane, spread out across the rolling green hillsides. It’s the sharp contrast between mega skyscrapers and tasteful red-roofed houses that we like: two completely different worlds nestled side by side.
Beautiful as they are, the mountains in this shot look disturbingly close to the camera. Is this the last picture the photographer ever took? If so, it’s one hell of a high-point to end your career on.
A perfectly-shot sunset, captured at the exact second the light disappeared below the edge of the world. For such a simple picture, it’s undeniably beautiful – etching itself into the very fabric of your mind.
New Zealand may be the most beautiful country on Earth. If you don’t believe us, just take a look at the above photo – captured off the coast of the south island. If there are any more beautiful waters anywhere in the world, we’ve yet to see them.
