Best Quotes Ever By Past NFL Players

The BCS National Championship game is now just around the corner. The best players in college football will go head to head in what promises to be an epic encounter. The teams and the players know that they will be under the spotlight so the pressure to perform is immense. Millions of football fans, coaches and scouts from around the country will be tuning in.

With the biggest games of the college football season now almost here and the NFL season in full swing as well, the sport has gripped the country like only it can. The NFL has been the stomping ground for many of the game’s biggest players who have presented such memorable moments. This is as good a time as any to take a trip down memory lane and see what has been said by some of the best past NFL players. A lot of these quotes might not be related to football at all but are still talked about.

1-Vince Lombardi

“Football is like life, it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.”

So we start with the legendary Vince Lombardi. Yes, he wasn’t an NFL player but he is the league’s first great coach in my opinion (and others too). This quote sums up what football meant to him and what it represents to fans likes us.

2-Bo Jackson

“If my mother put on a helmet and shoulder pads and a uniform that wasn’t the same as the one I was wearing, I’d run over her if she was in my way. And I love my mother.”

The legendary Bo Jackson describes how seriously he takes football.

3-Jim Brown

“Make sure when anyone tackles you he remembers how much it hurts.”

Jim Brown had a stellar career in the NFL and this quote gives an insight into how tough he really was.

4-Mike Ditka

“He’s just jealous. You know what they say. Empty tin cans make the most noise, and he’s an empty tin can. This game is between the Bears and the Eagles, not Ditka and Ryan. We all know who would win that one. Ditka, hands down.”

Mike Ditka was an amazing player, we all know that, and he took his competitive streak into coaching as well. His famous rivalry with Buddy Ryan is legendary and at one point, this is what Ditka said about his rival.

5-Steve McMichael

“Ten thousand bucks if ya knock him outta the game. I don’t care if ya hit him with a whiskey bottle when he gets off the bus.”

Steve McMichael wanted to win and he wanted to win badly. I guess that is what made him the great player he was. To ensure 49ers star Joe Montana is taken out of the NFC Championship game in 1988, this is what he said to his teammates.

6-Lyle Martin Alzado

“If me and King Kong went into an alley, only one of us would come out. And it wouldn’t be the monkey.”

Everyone knows Alzado was an extremely tough player and he knew it too apparently. This is how highly he rated himself.

7-Joe Theismann

“I was always told that I was too small, too skinny, too slow, not tough enough, and I never ever believed what people told me.”

Always believe in yourself if you want to go anywhere in life. That worked for Joe Theismann throughout his career.

8- Dick Butkus

“I wouldn’t ever set out to hurt anyone deliberately unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something.”

This is Football 101, Dick Butkus style.

9-George Rogers

“I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first.”

NFL players have dreams of their own and this is what George Rogers used to think about.

10-Archie Griffin

“It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.”

NFL is all about playing with heart. Forget about how tall you are or how fit you are; if you don’t have courage, you are going to end up nowhere. This famous Archie Griffin quote sums it up perfectly.

Author Kim Lee: This was my list of best quotes by past NFL players and in my opinion; they cover all that is great about football and more. These are the things that make players great and are a lesson to any aspiring young football player looking to reach the top.
