The first video game was created in October of 1958. The game was called Tennis for Two and was displayed at a physics laboratory tour. People were fascinated by the new game, and it was one of the most popular creations on the tour.
This was the only glimpse people would get for a while. The first videogame to be released commercially was the classic Pong, which hit arcades in 1971.
Video games have come a long way since then. In place of simplistic graphics and plotlines are realistic motion-capture and writing that can rival Oscar nominees. Each year brings even more of them.
We’ll talk about some of the best single-player PC games this year in the paragraphs below. Read on!
The original Doom may be one of the best single-player PC games of all time, and it’s not hard to see why. Going on a one-man rampage against the hordes of Hell in the shoes of a seemingly-inhuman juggernaut sounds unbelievably fun.
However, Doom Eternal has switched this up a little. The rampaging fun is still there, but there’s also a lot more worldbuilding, and a lot more focus on setting. The worlds you wander through are complex and often breathtaking.
Not only that, but the enemies are also built to be harder. The demons are varied enough that you’ll find yourself having to switch and adapt strategies on-the-fly to defeat new enemies.
If you want a great mixture of nostalgia and new, Doom Eternal may be just what you’re looking for.
It may not be Half-Life 3, but it is a new Half-Life game, and it’s not bad. One of the most ambitious things about this game is that it’s a VR game, and it does it well.
When systems like the Oculus Rift first came out, people hailed as a glimpse into the future. Then, they tried playing it and realized that we may be a while away from a truly immersive VR experience.
Half-Life: Alyx delivers a fairly polished experience that may help redeem VR systems. Players step into the shoes of the title character as they go through City 17 sometime before the events of Half-Life 2.
The game is bursting at the seams with the same strange, bleak, and creepy atmosphere that made the first two games popular. However, there’s something about being immersed in the experience which makes you see it on a whole new level.
Perhaps one of the coolest things about this game is that it’s available on Steam, so you don’t need a disk to play it. Many Apple users claim that they can’t access Steam, but there are ways to get Steam for Mac if you know-how.
Some of the greatest things happening in 2020 and the coming years are remakes. Games like Resident Evil 3, Final Fantasy 7, and Destroy All Humans are just a few of the favorites expected to hit the gaming world this year.
Among the most successful of these games thus far is Final Fantasy 7. This remake of the 1997 hit keeps the same story while updating graphics and adding a few new things.
For instance, the turn-based combat system that has turned some players away since the beginning has been revamped to give it a quicker, more modern feel. The game has also been split into episodes, released separately so the story doesn’t have to be shortened.
The Gears of War series has been around for 14 years and details the events of a war between humans and mutants. Gears Tactics is a new installment in the franchise and takes the series where it’s never gone before–the realm of strategy gaming.
Tapping into a whole new genre, Gears Tactics takes you on an adventure set during the earliest days of the war, before the first game takes place. You command Gabriel Diaz and several others as they fight off their mutant enemies in search of a scientist who may know something about where the mutants came from.
If you’re into games like X-COM, and Mutant: Year Zero, this new game may pique your interest. This also isn’t the only strategy game of its kind to come out this year, either. In addition to a new X-COM story, there’s also Empire of Sin, a strategy game set in 1920s Chicago.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a platforming puzzle game and a direct sequel to 2015’s Ori and the Blind Forest. It follows Ori, the protagonist from the first game, as they go on a quest to rescue a lost friend.
This game has a lot going for it, from emotional storylines to a beautiful setting. The new game sends Ori into a new world, which is filled with a whole new host of creatures and challenges.
Much like its predecessor, Ori and the Will of the Wisp is receiving great reviews is definitely a game worth checking out.
