Exciting news for Game of Thrones fans! Max (formerly known as HBO Max) has officially greenlit a new prequel series titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Tales of Dunk and Egg, this fantasy series has been in development for some time and will follow the adventures of the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, 90 years prior to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire.
The novellas, including The Hedge Knight (1998), The Sworn Sword (2003), and The Mystery Knight (2010), have already been published and a collection of the three novellas, with illustrations by Gary Gianni, was published as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2015. The stories are set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory.
The official synopsis for the new series reads: “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
This will be the second prequel series to be picked up by Max, after last year’s House of the Dragon. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight will be written and executive produced by Martin and House of the Dragon producer Ira Parker, and executive produced by Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis.
Fans of the Game of Thrones franchise will undoubtedly be eagerly anticipating the release of this new prequel series. With a strong creative team behind it and an intriguing storyline, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is sure to be a hit among viewers.
