Matilda was born in February of 2013 in a hoarder house. She was saved by a rescue society and adopted 12 weeks later by a loving family. As she grew older everything was normal aside from a squinty eye and enlarged pupil she would periodically get. Her owners took her to the vet several times, but by the time they arrived the squinting and enlarged pupil always subsided.
The owners decided to reach out to the rescue society to see if any other kittens from the litter had reported any eye issues and it turned out two of them had developed a mysterious eye condition. They took Matilda to a veterinary ophthalmologist who said Matilda displayed signs of spontaneous ‘lens luxation’. An owner of one of the other kittens opted for surgery with mixed results so the family decided to take a ‘wait and see’ approach instead.
Both of Matilda’s eyes have since luxated and she now gets eye drops for treatment along with regular checkups to monitor any changes in behaviour that might suggest she’s uncomfortable (the pressure levels in her eyes remain normal). Although nearly blind she can still see light and motion. Her owners are happy to report that Matilda seems to be doing well and is adjusting to her new-found fame as an Instagram sensation.
