It should come as no surprise to anyone that most celebrities work very hard to look a certain way. Famous people have been known to try everything from specialty diet and exercise programs to finding something like San Diego Cosmetic Surgeons, and in some cases, even “miracle” pills and drinks to get their bodies to look the way they want them to. In some cases, though, celebrities have been known to give up the bodies and looks that they have worked so hard for in order to fill a role in film. Here, we will go over five celebrities who drastically changed their appearance for a role.
Christian Bale, an action star with a body to admire, had to lose 65 pounds in four months to play the lead role in his film, The Machinist. The end result left Bale just as sickly looking and emaciated as the part called for. Christian then had five months to get back up from 121 pounds to 190 pounds in order to play Batman in, “Batman Begins.”
On the other end of the spectrum we find Jared Leto. This actor/musician has been flaunting his well chiseled body all over Hollywood for years, but to meet the role of Mark David Chapman in the film, “Chapter 27,” Leto had to give it up. To play the maniac who killed John Lennon, Jared Leto had to gain 60 pounds. “I couldn’t walk for long distances; I had a wheelchair because it was so painful,” said the actor when asked about the changes he made for the role in an article by the Daily News.
Natalie Portman, who has a slight build at the best of times, still had to cut 20 pounds in order to play a mentally unstable ballerina in her Academy Award winning film, “Black Swan.”
For her roles as Bridget Jones, Renee Zellweger had to plump up from her normal size 6 body, to a comfortable size 14. For those films, where Zellweger plays a British woman who is not obese, but still deals a lot with body issues, the actress had to gain around 30 pounds.
Rapper 50 Cent, who is well known for his harsh lyrics and thick biceps, dropped over 50 pounds for the role of a football player with cancer in the movie, “Things Fall Apart.” He lost all the weight in the course of 9 weeks, using a liquid diet and three a day workouts.
