Netflix has unleashed the first trailer for its upcoming movie Spiderhead, which was directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Top Gun: Maverick). The movie is defined as “a genre-bending and darkly funny psychological thriller,” and it has a wonderful cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, Jurnee Smollett, Mark Paguio, and Tess Haubrich.
The movie is based on a New Yorker short story by George Saunders, and the story is set in the near future, where prisoners are offered the chance to volunteer as medical subjects to shrink their sentences. They end up being given medication that discharges all kinds of wild emotions and things get slightly out of hand.
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
In the near future in a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by the brilliant visionary Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth), inmates wear a surgically attached device that administers dosages of mind-altering drugs in exchange for commuted sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits. In Spiderhead, incarcerated volunteers are free to be themselves. Until they’re not. At times, they’re a better version. Need to lighten up? There’s a drug for that. At a loss for words? There’s a drug for that, too… But when two subjects, Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett), form a connection, their path to redemption take a twistier turn, as Abnesti’s experiments begin to push the limits of free will altogether.
The movie script was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland), and it will stream on Netflix starting June 17th, 2022.
