The first trailer to Michael Cera‘s drug-fueled road trip comedy Crystal Fairy and the Magical Cactus. Heard alot of good things about the movie and after seeing the trailer it made me recall the Pineapple Express to some extent. Have a look at the trailer and say your views in the comments!
On a trip through Chile a boorish American expat named Jamie (Michael Cera) and three Chilean brothers plan to set off in search of the prized San Pedro cactus and its promise of beachy hallucinations.
But in the previous night’s drunken stupor Jamie invites a free-spirited fellow American (Gaby Hoffmann), whose devil-may-care worldview gives them more of an adventure than any of them had bargained for.
Crystal Fairy and the Magical Cactus is a subliminal flash-frame lifted from The Exorcist that suggests that this tale of mismatched youths venturing into the Chilean desert to do drugs is headed somewhere hellish. It isn’t – unless you count hanging out with drug addict dopers as a hellish experience. Instead, it pootles around in vaguely trippy fashion, relying on loose improvisation as the characters variously get on each other’s nerves, and sometimes they are on my nerves too before reaching a collective one-ness with the universe. Or something — it is really confusing and not as fun as Pineapple Express.
Knocked together while Sebastián Silva and Michael Cera were prepping the thriller Magic Magic, this indulgent whimsy gropes towards some interesting ideas, notably the male fear and mistreatment of women, which teeters on the brink of insight. But like its characters, the movie is struggling to focus on the subject but lose it’s focus really quickly, preferring instead to talking about Mayan calendar mumbo jumbo.
The movie was uplifting and liberating to make but sadly it is not as rewarding as it should be.
