Thanos is considered the main character in Avengers: Infinity War. We now know what his whole plan is, the only one goal he has in mind that sets him on his journey! The whole reason behind his universal destruction in the comics was to win over Death so that he could court her affection.
In one of the Doctor Strange special features, co-writer Stephen McFeely talked about Infinity War and described Thanos’ ultimate goal as this:
“His goal is to rebalance the universe as he sees it. So when he figures out that the Infinity Stones could do this for him at the snap of a finger, that becomes his main goal.”
At this time we can only speculate as to what “rebalancing the universe” means, but it definitely doesn’t sound to me like he’s pursuing Death. Maybe he sees it as a cleansing of all of the superheroes who are rising in the universe. Time will tell.
It’s not really that surprising that Marvel is switching some things up with Thanos’ motivation behind wiping our half of the universe. They’ve made big changes to every storyline that they’ve used from the comics.
Infinity War story will most likely follow Thanos as he continues his search in the galaxy for the Infinity Stones, and once he has them he’s going to unleash hell in the MCU that will spill over into the fourth Avengers film. This is getting exciting.
Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4th, 2018.
