Warner Bros. has recently released the first trailer for their upcoming DC Studios film, Blue Beetle. This announcement comes amidst the studio canceling several of its other film, TV, and streaming projects. Despite Batgirl being canceled, Blue Beetle is slated to make it to the big screen. The trailer promises an entertaining film, but as with all DC projects, it remains to be seen if the movie will be a hit or miss with audiences.
The movie follows Jaime Reyes, the alter ego of the Blue Beetle, a vigilante who gains immense powers through an ancient scarab grafted onto his spine. The trailer gives viewers a glimpse of his transformation, which looks like a family-friendly version of body horror. The official synopsis of the movie reads:
“Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.”
Angel Manuel Soto, the director of Charm City Kings, helms Blue Beetle with a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who adapted the script from Miss Bala. The movie stars Xolo Maridueña, known for his role in Cobra Kai, as Jaime Reyes. Bruna Marquezine plays Penny, the female lead and love interest of Reyes, while Belissa Escobedo plays Jamie’s younger sister, Milagros. The cast also includes Harvey Guillén and Susan Sarandon as the villain Victoria Kord.
The trailer suggests that Blue Beetle will be an exciting addition to the DC universe, showcasing a unique character and an intriguing storyline. Fans can anticipate a fresh take on the superhero genre, with the added bonus of exploring diverse cultures and ethnicities.
Blue Beetle is scheduled for a theatrical release on August 18, 2023. The exclusive theatrical release promises a cinematic experience that audiences can enjoy on the big screen. DC fans eagerly await the arrival of this film and hope that it will be a much-needed success for the DC universe.
