Without Japan’s video game industry, the modern landscape of gaming would look very different. Over the years, numerous excellent games for various consoles and platforms have come out of the country, including some awesome PC games. Here is our pick of the five best Japanese games currently available for PC.

God Eater 2: Rage Burst

God Eater 2: Rage Burst

God Eater 2 was one of eleven games that won the Future Division title at the 2013 Japan Game Awards. God Eater 2: Rage Burst is an expansion of the game, which was released for Windows in 2016. The action RPG is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which the Aragami monsters have destroyed civilization as we know it. All is not lost, however, because in God Eater 2: Rage Burst, you get to play as one of the individuals called God Eaters who are hunting down the evil creatures.


Final Fantasy XV

Originally released for Xbox One and PS4 in 2016, Final Fantasy XV came out on Windows in 2018. Part of the hugely successful Final Fantasy series, this game is the best of the series for PC. The action RPG takes place in a world called Eos. The land is ruled by the empire of Niflheim, which is seeking to control a magic crystal that is protected by the Lucian royal family. Final Fantasy XV features an open world environment and an action-based system that incorporates elemental magic, fast-switching weapons, and other fantastic elements. With ultra-high-resolution with modern graphics and online multiplayer support, Final Fantasy XV is an absolute joy to play.

Fantasy-themed games are popular in Japan not only for PC and consoles but also for pachinkos, which are comparable to slot machines. The sequel to the 2010 game Nier is bigger and better than the original. Their aim was to make the game as true to the original’s spirit while improving elements like the combat system. And boy, did they accomplish their goals!

Nier: Automata, which was released for Windows via Steam and PS4 in 2017, is set during a war between alien-created machines and human-crafted androids. It is up to you to reclaim the abandoned, post-apocalyptic earth. The game is fast-paced with a well-crafted story, and it switches into different game modes. It also contains multiple endings, so you will not get bored of playing Nier: Automata any time soon.

Tekken 7

Tekken 7

Tekken 7 was developed and published by the Japanese company Bandai Namco Entertainment. Despite its name, the game is actually the ninth installment in the popular Tekken series. It was originally released as an arcade game in 2015. The Windows version was launched in 2017.

The fighting game is set shortly after Tekken 6, and its plot focuses on the events leading up to the final fight between Heihachi Mishima and Kazuya. Tekken 7 contains two new fantastic elements. Firstly, the Rage Arts feature enables players to execute a game-changing special move. Secondly, the Power Crush feature allows players to continue attacking while being attacked. An online mode is also available for Tekken 7, so you can play with anyone from anywhere in the world. The game has been a massive success. So far, it has sold more than five million copies worldwide.

Metal Gear Solid 5

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

The ninth installment in the Metal Gear series was written, directed, and designed by Hideo Kojima for Kojima Productions. Upon its release in 2015, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was described by many gaming publications and fans as one of the greatest stealth games of all time. One element that makes it stand out against other stealth games is its custom Fox Engine, which provides photorealistic visuals. The game is set in 1984, nine years after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. It sees Snake awaken from a coma and establishing a private army to exact revenge on those who destroyed his previous forces and came close to killing him in the previous game.

The Phantom Pain won numerous awards upon its release, including the critics’ choice for the Golden Joystick Awards and various Game of the Year awards.
