The recent announcement that the Game of Thrones television series would not likely be running beyond seven or eight seasons has many fans wondering how the hell HBO plans on cramming everything that George R.R. Martin has created into so few years.
Given that they’ve already split book 3 into two seasons, what’s going to happen further down the line, particularly when things come to a head? Well, Martin himself has offered up a solution to the problem – turn the last bit of the series into a multi-million-dollar movie.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin had a few words to share:
It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.
Whether this confirms that the powers-that-be are actually thinking of going this route remains to be seen. They’re making some serious cash off of the HBO run and aren’t likely to give up that giant slice of money-pie as long as people keep watching. And, believe me, people will watch until the bitter, bitter end – even if you kill off every damned character they like. (via)
