New photo of Scarlett Johansson as The Major in the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell released today and you can see it above. The movie also stars Beat Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki, Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet, Michael Pitt as Kuze, Pilou Asbæk as Batou, and Kaori Momoi. The members of Section 9 are played by Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara, and Tuwanda Manyimo.
When talking to Empire about taking on the role of the Major and the film itself, Johansson tells them:
“I’ve been a person without a body, now I’m a mind in a synthetic body. Eventually I’ll go back to playing a body and brain together. This is a ride that’s not just explosive and exciting, but also curious and reflective”
Director Rupert Sanders adds: “This isn’t the shit Hollywood version.”
Ghost in the Shell follows the Major, special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
The film is based on the classic manga series that was written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow.
Ghost in the Shell is set to be released in theaters on March 31, 2017.
