Independence Day 2 is set for a rewrite today as Variety reports that Carter Blanchard (the upcoming Spy Hunter) has boarded the project, taking over a draft by James Vanderbilt.

Directed by Roland Emmerich, Emmerich previously confirmed that a number of the original film’s characters appear in the script with Jeff Goldlum having already confirmed his involvement. Will Smith, however, has stated that he will not be back. Bill Pullman, Randy Quaid, Mary McDonnell, Brent Spiner, James Duval and Vivica A. Fox also starred in the original.

Release Date July 1, 2016.
