John Carpenter THE THING Sequel May Happen, But He’s “Sworn To Secrecy”

THE THING

Renowned director John Carpenter recently stirred up a wave of excitement among die-hard fans of the original film, The Thing, with an intriguing comment that promises potential for a direct sequel. The mere idea of a follow-up to this iconic masterpiece is enough to send shivers down one’s spine. While no specific details have emerged regarding the nature of this potential sequel or Carpenter’s involvement as a director, the notion itself is mind-boggling.

Imagining a scenario where Carpenter returns to helm another chapter in The Thing saga seems like a far-fetched dream. It’s widely believed that Carpenter has shifted his focus away from directing and has been reveling in the joys of video gaming. His absence from the director’s chair has left many enthusiasts wondering if he still possesses the drive to undertake such a demanding role. However, should he decide to take the reins of a sequel to The Thing, fans would undoubtedly experience a collective state of frenzy.

While talking about Creepy Catalog in a recent interview, the filmmaker was asked about the possibility of a sequel and this was his response:

“I have been sworn to secrecy, okay, because there may be, I don’t know if there will be, there may be a Thing 2.”

The original film, released in 1982, garnered a dedicated following due to its chilling atmosphere, gripping narrative, and groundbreaking practical effects. Carpenter’s unique vision and meticulous attention to detail brought to life a tale of isolation, paranoia, and shape-shifting horrors. It’s no wonder that fans have been yearning for more ever since.

The concept of a direct sequel to The Thing raises numerous questions: Will the story continue where the original left off, or will it venture into new and unexplored territories? Will the surviving characters face an even greater threat than before, or will new individuals be thrust into the nightmarish ordeal? The possibilities are tantalizing, and the potential involvement of Carpenter would undoubtedly ignite a firestorm of anticipation.

As fans eagerly await any tidbits of information about this rumored sequel, they find themselves torn between the improbability of Carpenter’s return and the sheer excitement of witnessing a continuation of The Thing’s chilling universe. It is a testament to the enduring impact of Carpenter’s work that even the mere suggestion of his involvement sends shockwaves through the fan community.

Only time will tell if this tantalizing prospect becomes a reality. Until then, fans will keep their fingers crossed, hoping against hope that the stars align and the pieces fall into place for a sequel that honors the legacy of the original while ushering in a new chapter of spine-tingling terror.

When previously talking about a possible sequel to The Thing, Carpenter said:

“Maybe The Thing. Maybe Prince of Darkness. I can see a little bit more of that. But we’ll see. You never know in this business. You really don’t. I just think there’s another bit of a story to tell there, which I’m not going to tell you about. But there have been some discussions about The Thing and what we could do because, as far as we know, both those two main characters — Childs [Keith David] and MacReady [Kurt Russell] — are still alive. They were alive at the end of The Thing, so maybe they’re still alive.”
