Karl Urban wants a fresh story for the next Star Trek film, which should “strive to be something different and new”…
SPOILER ALERT! It’s best not to read this piece if you’ve not seen Star Trek Into Darkness
Star Trek Into Darkness arrives on DVD and Blu-ray next month, and our guess is that it’s going to be another three years until we see another Star Trek film on the big screen. Given that 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, it would seem likely that Paramount would want a film then to lead the birthday celebrations. We don’t mind a new TV show too, if it’s feeling particularly generous.
Furthermore, there’s also the fact that incumbent director, JJ Abrams, has his hands full with Star Wars: Episode VII, which is due in cinemas in 2015. The job of directing the next Star Trek film is presumably his to turn down. It does seem feasible that the mantle may pass to someone else though, given the tightness of the schedule.
IGN has been nattering to Karl Urban, and when asked who should direct the next Star Trek film, he said that “that’s a hard one, because JJ has set the bar so high”. He did add that “that being said, I look forward and welcome a fresh take, a new energy. If anything I think JJ is an inspiring individual … he’s going to push his contemporary to be better than they are”.
As for what he wants from the next film?
[box] “What I really believe we should do now is strive for originality. Because in Star Trek Into Darkness we took one of the most revered and loved adversaries of the Enterprise and put him in there, and did a story that had all of these wonderful nods to films from the past, and episodes from the past. I really think that what we should do from here, in my personal opinion, is strive to be original. Strive to be something different and new”.[/box]
