We recently had unconfirmed word of Warner Bros. upcoming superhero movie slate. It included the awkwardly titled Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for 2016 and Zack Snyder’s Justice League project for 2017. We knew for sure Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Cyborg would be involved but a new report says Aquaman is also a go and Game of Thrones’ Jason Momoa is almost set to play him.
Hitfix.com actually says Momoa is “totally” playing Aquaman but there’s no confirmation from the studio. You may recall back in December of 2013, it was reported the actor was in negotiations for the film previously referred to as the Man of Steel sequel. Back then, they were leaning toward him playing the hero Martian Manhunter or villain Doomsday. However, Momoa himself said he turned down a shirtless superhero role previously, that of Drax in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
“I’ve done so many things where I don’t say much and I’m colored up and I have my shirt off again,” said Momoa. “I want my children to see their father happy. It’s not that it’s not a good role, it just wasn’t the right thing. I was on Stargate: Atlantis for four years playing a similar character called Ronon, who was an alien who didn’t say much and grunted. I’ve been there and done that, whether people have seen it or not. You want to stretch.”
Well, Aquaman can be happy, depending on who’s writing him. Of course if he’s playing the undersea king, we imagine there might be one or two instances where Momoa winds up shirtless. Maybe.
While Warner Bros. hasn’t made that announcement officially yet, HitFix can confirm that he will be playing the part, and that Zack Snyder has already finalized his designs for the character so shooting can take place soon…
