This is a pretty big thing and I’m psyched, James Cameron returning to the Terminator franchise to give us a new trilogy of films. Tim Miller (Deadpool) is developing the film alongside Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to return to the franchise, and now we find out that Linda Hamilton will be back as well! She will reprise her role of Sarah Connor, How you like that!
According to THR, Cameron made the announcement at a private event celebrating the storied franchise, saying:
“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return. There are 50-year old, 60-year old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women.”
It’s then revealed that Cameron and Miller are treating the next film in the franchise as a direct sequel to Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day. It’s explained that a new young female character will be brought into the franchise, but the Terminator and Sarah Connor will be the anchor of the story. Cameron says:
“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story. We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
Cameron gets the rights to the property back in 2019, but Miller and Cameron are currently working on developing it with a team of writers that includes David Goyer (Dark Angel), Charles Eglee, and Josh Friedman, who created the Terminator spin-off series The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
