Standing Stone Games and Turbine released The Lord of the Rings Online in 2007 alongside publishers Daybreak Game Company, Codemasters, and Midway Games. The game is not so famous as it once was. Then, last year, Amazon Game Studios revealed a new Massive Multiplayer Online game (MMO) that is going to be based on Middle-Earth before the events of The Lord of the Rings. The game was to be developed by Leyou Technologies and now bought by Tencent Games.
Now some information is available online including the Project Austin Co-Development and Co-Operation Agreement. This agreement lists the milestones for licensors and points to what the originally intended release window for the new LOTR game.
The schedule had a PC closed beta which will happen in September 2022 and an open beta by January 2023. The game was then set to release within one year of the open beta release making it at the latest January 2024, or Summer 2023 at most likely.
After a look at the documents which were signed back in 2019, before the COVID-19, who knows. It is possible that the devs are still shooting for these releasesdates, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it shifted things back. We might see the game release until 2023 at the absolute earliest with trailers and first looks coming in 2022.
