Making of Rachel in Blade Runner 2049

Rachel in Blade Runner 2049

In this day and age, it is hard to recognize good visual effects from real things and or people. The technology is improving everyday and animations are getting more lifelike. Some are better than others, Blade Runner 2049 has a digitally re-created character and she was as convincing as the real actor.

In the highly anticipated sequel, we see the return of Sean Young as the well-know replicant named Rachel from the original Blade Runner. But, instead of simply bringing back Sean Young and de-aging her, director Denis Villeneuve decided to use a different actor and have the younger version of Young recreated entirely with visual effects. In the video below you will see the whole process if you haven’t seen the movie yet I recommend you skip the video. Spoiler ahead.

In the video, we see how a performance double was also present on the set, but a very precisely crafted digital double was used in the final cut. What’s more amazing is that there are many shots from the original Blade Runner recreated with this digital double, and you can’t notice the difference at all.

The Moving Picture Company (MPC) visual effects studio even get the real Sean Young in the project for scanning and they used her for reference and frame by frame recreating her exact movements on her face in the younger digital double. The whole thing is so cool and magical that you have to watch the video if you love technology and special effects, the whole thing is genius. Watch the video below.
