In a new press release, IMAX confirms that The Russos will shoot the entirety of the two-part Avengers: Infinity War movies using a next-generation IMAX 2D digital camera that’s a customized version of ARRI’s Alexa 65.
Movies like The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens used IMAX film cameras for small sections, but this will be the first Hollywood blockbuster made entirely with a digital IMAX camera.
The Russos released a joint statement:
“The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring ten years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/ARRI Digital camera.”
Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 arrives on May 4, 2018, and Part 2 arrives on May 3, 2019.
