Superheroes have perhaps never been as in vogue as right now. One of the biggest reasons behind this is the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the series of movies and TV shows based on Marvel comic characters which have broken box-office and viewership records over the last decade or so. Characters such as Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Ant-Man, War Machine, and Falcon, who would have only been known to comic-book fans, are all household names now due to their success of the MCU. Add to this the constant appearances of the likes of Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman from the DC Comics world on our screens, albeit with a lot less successful, and the popularity of TV shows such as The Boys, and you can understand why superhero movies are all the rage at the moment. It has also been refreshing to see some new and interesting storylines in this regard, and the Netflix movie Project Power is a great example of this.
Project Power, which stars Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in lead roles, is about a mysterious drug that can give a person superhuman abilities for five minutes. It is set in New Orleans, where we see Foxx’s character looking for this drug for some personal reasons, while Gordon-Levitt plays the cop trying to find the source of this drug and stop its spread. Dominique Fishback plays one of the dealers who is helping Gordon-Levitt in this chase. It is interesting to note that the powers granted by the pill are random and differ from person to person, so you will not know what powers you will gain when you take the pill. This adds quite an interesting dynamic to the movie’s plot.
This is an example of a different take on the superhero genre, following in the footsteps of The Boys, which looks at the impact of people with superhuman abilities using their powers selfishly rather than for the greater good. The success of these shows demonstrates that the superhero movie genre remains alive and kicking, and, in fact, it is also helping spawn content across other industries as well. The online slot games sector is one such area that has always taken a lot of inspiration from superhero movies, and given the popularity of the genre at present, now you can check a list of Marvel or DC-inspired slot games by Winz casino and expect more to be released in the near future as well.
Coming back to this movie, it is directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost, the duo who directed the two sequels to the original Paranormal Activity movie. It does get a little cliched at times, with standard bad guys and a slightly predictable plot. However, the cinematography is excellent, with some superb shots and good visual effects, while the action sequences are also interesting. Fishback is excellent as the dealer Robin, and this could become a breakthrough role for her. The movie also does a good job of showing the ground reality of the pill’s effects on the people of New Orleans. Foxx is his usual charismatic self, and he breezes through the movie, as the character itself is a little bland and again feels like quite a cliched role. Gordon-Levitt is uncharacteristically poor as the cop who will do anything to stop the spread of the pill, which is a shame, considering his talent, and this is also slightly uncomfortable to view given the current situation regarding police brutality in the United States.
Nevertheless, the film’s premise is certainly interesting, and it is a good attempt at bringing a fresh viewpoint to the world of superheroes. Storylines such as these are quite interesting, and we should hope to see more of this style of moviemaking in the near future.
