Marvel president Kevin Feige talked about the adaptation validating that the film would portray the modern incarnation of the team, which comes with such intergalactic superheroes as Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon.
This even helps explain the end credits scene in The Avengers with Thanos a little better, because Thanos will be in Guardians of the Galaxy! That’s right, they teased this new movie at the end ofThe Avengers. It was also revealed that it will help lead up to The Avengers 2 in 2015! Marvel will officially announce the movie at Comic-Con 2012.
Here’s a breakdown of what has been reported so far…
One: The end credits scene at the end of The Avengers was both a teaser forAvengers 2 AND Guardians of the Galaxy.
Two: The Guardians being added to the Unified Universe means the theorhetical chronological order of Marvel Unified Movie Universe Phase 2 is: Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, Guardians of the Galaxy. Hulk gets the shaft.
Three: If I were to point you in the direction of a comic to read to theorize what Guardians of the Galaxy would be about, I’d suggest you go buy The Thanos Imperative.
Four: Nova. Expect Nova. There’s got to be a reason that Nova keeps showing up in stuff like Disney’s Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel’s AvX. He’s not a Guardian per se, but he’s the most recognizable Marvel space character to the all-important “we’re young and buy toys” demographic.
The story of the suggested comic, The Thanos Imperative, focuses on the Guardians of the Galaxy, who band unitedly to resist the looming threat of The Fault, which is a rift in space-time created at the end of War of Kings, and the Cancerverse that lies beyond it, which is a universe where death itself is extinct.
Here’s a more detailed description of the story:
While the Guardians of the Galaxy watch over the newly resurrected Thanos and imprisoned and Nova Quasar pursues the false, the Church of Truth theUniversal Magus and rip open the Fault (open at the end of the War of the Kings and previously sealed by Adam Warlock). Monstrous creatures emerge from the failure and compares with the Kree and Shi’ar forces and many cosmic beings. Among them is their leader, Lord March Vell, which is an alternate version of Captain Marvel. Tues Vell kills the Magus for failure to identify Thanos.
Tues Vell is the avatar of Life, and Thanos is the avatar of Death. For this reason, the battle is only on when one of them kills the other. While Star-Lord leads the Guardians and Thanos hoping to find fault in the Lord Tues Vell, Vell Lord Tues scoures the Marvel Universe for Thanos. Leads Nova Quasar, Beta Ray Bill, Gladiator, Silver Surfer and Ronan the Accuser in an attack in Mar Vell, but loses badly. When Thanos kills Drax the Destroyer, his death as the avatar of notices of life Tues Vell his prescence and return to cancerverse.
When Tues Vell addresses Thanos and the Guardians, everyone is surprised when Thanos surrenders immediately. As he prepares to be willingly sacrificed by Mar Vell, Captain Marvel reflects on how he knew that he never considered the consequences of his actions, either. Tues Vell realizes that he was tricked as well as death, summoned from the dead, Thanos, arrives to claim him. This causes a chain reaction that kills the followers of Mar Vell, triggering the collapse of the universe and the alternate fault. Thanos, expecting death to embrace him for his actions, is furious when she despises him again. Teleporting the rest of their comrades to safety, Lord Star and Nova stay behind to hold Thanos holding it inside the Cancerverse until its imminent destruction.
A memorial service is held for those lost in conflicts. Rocket Raccoon Quasar informs that, without Nova, Worldmind has gone off and the Nova Force. Still reeling from the fight, the Empire is beset by Kree on Hala Blastaar forces in an attempt to easy conquest. During the battle, Ronan is aided by the other surviving members of the attacking force of Nova. Under the leadership of Cosmo, they set up base in Knowhere. The newly-christened “Annihilators” suggest that this is a loose-knit force to be implemented only as a “last resort”. Suddenly, the Knights Ikon space materializes in their midst, proclaiming the urgency in his office and asking where to find “this team [which is] to lead.”
