Universal Pictures has released that Illumination’s Minions 2 is named as Minions: The Rise of Gru, and will be directed by Kyle Balda (Minions) and Brad Ableson.
The title suggests that it may center on Gru’s origin story and how the yellow minions originally became the henchmen of the Despicable Me supervillain. The end of 2015’s Minions featured an appearance by Gru as a young boy.
Minions grossed $1.159 billion globally in 2015 and are still 11th on the all-time worldwide blockbuster list. In the movie, Minions have worked history’s most despicable villains. After their latest explosive blunder leaves them without an evil leader, the Minions fall into a deep recession. With the race on the brink of collapse, three unlikely heroes—Kevin, Stuart, and Bob—leave on a journey to find a new boss. When their journey leads them to their next possible master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock), our three heroes must face their greatest challenge yet: saving all of Minionkind… from extinction.
Minions: The Rise of Gru will release in theaters on Friday, July 3, 2020.
