Neill Blomkamp, the acclaimed director of District 9 and Elysium, is currently working on his next big film project with Sony Pictures, titled Gran Turismo. Inspired by the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the movie is set to be an ultimate wish-fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions, leading him to become a professional racecar driver.
Jann Mardenborough was able to translate his impressive gaming skills into real-life racing through a series of Nissan competitions, and this remarkable journey will be portrayed on the big screen. The film is not just about cool and intense racing scenes, but also a great story with solid character development. The north star for the director was to make a videogame title with character work that propels the movie, even more so than the racing.
Embracing the same filmmaking techniques used in Top Gun: Maverick, the movie features real actors in real cars, on real race tracks, driving insanely quickly. The racing scenes are bound to be intense, but the filmmaker aims to tell a story that will captivate audiences even more.
The ensemble cast is also impressive, featuring Orlando Bloom and David Harbour, who are set to star in the film alongside Archie Madekwe. The cast also includes Djimon Hounsou, Geri Halliwell-Horner, Daniel Puig, Maeve Courtier-Lilley, Emelia Hartford, Pepe Barroso, and Sang Heon Lee.
The movie is directed by Neill Blomkamp from a script by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, with PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan producing alongside Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti. Game creator Kazunori Yamauchi and Jason Hall are executive producing the film.
The movie is set to be released in theaters by Sony Pictures on August 11, 2023. Fans of Gran Turismo and racing enthusiasts alike can look forward to an intense and emotional story brought to life by an outstanding cast and crew.
