Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog” is leading the Academy Award nominations, garnering 12 nominations.
Warner Bros.′ “Dune” also secured 10, and “West Side Story” and “Belfast” each scored 7 in different categories.
All 4 movies were nominated for best picture, a category that has 10 candidates this year, as part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ equity and inclusion initiative. “CODA,” “King Richard,” “Nightmare Alley” “Don’t Look Up,” “Licorice Pizza,” and the Japanese hit movie “Drive My Car” are the remainder of the best picture nominees.
Lady Gaga got the nomination for best actress for the role she played in “House of Gucci,” with Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”) and Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) gaining the 5 nominations.
The best actor category is dominated by Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”) The Power of the Dog is now the odds-on favorite (-175) to win Best Picture according to Sports Betting Dime, Andrew Garfield (“Tick, Tick … Boom!”), Will Smith (“King Richard”), Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”), and Javier Bardem (“Being the Ricardos”) each get a nomination.
The 2022 Oscar nominations contained several firsts. In the best supporting actor category Troy Kotsur (“CODA”) has become the first deaf man and the second deaf actor who was nominated for an Academy Award. His co-star Marlee Matlin was the first deaf nominee and winner, in 1986 for “Children of a Lesser God.”
“CODA” also celebrates Apple’s first-ever best picture nomination.
“Flee,” a Danish animated documentary, earned for a best international picture, best-animated feature, and best feature documentary. It is the first feature to ever be nominated in all 3 categories.
Kenneth Branagh also made a record on Tuesday, having gotten seven nominations in 7 different categories throughout his career. His movie “Belfast” got the best director nomination as well as one for best picture and best original screenplay.
Steven Spielberg is also made a come back on the nominee card in 2022 for his work on 20th Century Studio’s “West Side Story.” It is his first directing nomination since 2012′s “Lincoln.” He is the first person to acquire best director nominations on all 6 different decades.
The 94th Oscars will be held on March 27 in Los Angeles at the Dolby Theatre and you can see it live on ABC.
