Universal plans to launch a monster movie universe. The Mummy serves as a reboot of both the studio’s classic horror movie franchise and the Brendan Fraser-starring trilogy. Despite the lofty hopes and the attachment of a huge star in Tom Cruise, The Mummy wasn’t able to frighten up many spectators in its opening weekend, debuting to a bad $31.5 million domestic gross. The frustrating start for the thriller likely won’t completely unravel Universal’s so-called “Dark Universe,” but it definitely spells disaster.
