Telltale is Making Game of Thrones Game Based on HBO Series

In addition to the unexpected, and admittedly peculiar, announcement of Tales from the Borderlands, Telltale Games had yet another reveal for the Spike VGX 2013 – one that was less unexpected, but arguably more exciting. The rumors were true and now it’s official: Telltale Games is working on a Game of Thrones title.

A brief trailer accompanied the announcement, but the most important thing to note about this game is that it will be a companion for Game of Thrones the HBO series not George R.R. Martin’s novels. Obviously, the series is, itself, based on Martin’s work, but it’s important to make that distinction.

As far as what gamers can expect, Telltale Games didn’t say much, only that this game will be a “new chapter,” suggesting that, like The Walking Dead, this Game of Thrones title will exist in the same world but follow new characters. We wouldn’t be surprised if a few familiar faces made an appearance, but it’s too early to tell at this point.

Also like The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones seems to be the perfect property for Telltale to take on. From the political intrigue to the epic battles, Game of Thrones offers a wide variety of experiences from which Telltale could draw on for potential storylines, and most importantly it’s a franchise that embraces killing off key characters.
