Thanos co-creator Jim Starlin recently revealed some fascinating details about the original storyline of Avengers: Infinity War, which unfortunately ended up being cut from the final version of the film. In an interview with Near Mint Condition, Starlin disclosed that the first 45 minutes of the movie initially followed Thanos as he obtained his first Infinity Stone, providing a deeper insight into the villain’s background and motivations.
“But about a month before the movie came out, I got an email or something from Joe [Russo], saying ‘The 45 minutes of Thanos that we had at the beginning of Infinity War, we had to cut,’” Starlin explained. “There was a whole sequence of him getting the first gem, and they had to cut that out. They had shot it, but they had never wanted to spend the money on the effects and that, and they didn’t want the movie to be as long as the second one was. They didn’t realize it was going to be quite the hit it was.”
According to Starlin, this narrative thread was ultimately removed from the movie due to its already lengthy runtime, which is understandable given the film’s jam-packed ensemble cast and action-packed storyline. However, the idea of releasing a director’s cut version of the movie gave hope to Starlin and fans alike that some of this additional storyline would be included on the DVD release. Unfortunately, this never came to fruition, and the additional footage remained unseen by audiences.
Despite the removal of this storyline, Avengers: Infinity War still managed to captivate audiences and became one of the highest-grossing films of all time, grossing over $2 billion at the box office. The movie showcased the epic battle between the Avengers and the Mad Titan Thanos, who was on a mission to collect all six Infinity Stones to gain ultimate power with the Infinity Gauntlet. The film’s success set the stage for the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame, which provided a satisfying conclusion to the Infinity Saga and left audiences in awe.
Overall, it’s interesting to hear about the original plans for Avengers: Infinity War and how it could have potentially changed the course of the film. However, even without this additional storyline, the movie still managed to deliver an unforgettable experience for Marvel fans around the world.
