Disney fans have been eagerly anticipating the release of the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, and the first big main trailer dropped during the Oscars on Sunday evening. While a quick teaser had been shown around the time of the Super Bowl, this new trailer gave fans a proper look at the entire cast.
Chloe Bailey takes on the iconic role of Ariel, the little mermaid who dreams of living on land with humans. However, we also get to see the rest of the cast in action, including Melissa McCarthy as the infamous Sea Witch Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric. The beloved characters of Flounder, voiced by Jacob Tremblay, Sebastian, featuring the vocal tones of Daveed Diggs, and Scuttle, voiced by Awkwafina, are also brought to life through CGI.
The film’s plot is expected to follow the original animated version, as well as Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story. The story centers around Ariel rescuing Prince Eric from a shipwreck and falling in love with him and his world. In exchange for a chance to walk on land and be with Eric, Ariel must give up her voice. This time, the script is written by David Magee, with Lin-Manuel Miranda helping out on some fresh lyrics, alongside musical guru Alan Menken.
Fans of the original Little Mermaid movie will be excited to see their favorite characters come to life on the big screen. With a talented cast and the creative minds behind the film, it’s sure to be a magical experience for audiences of all ages. The release date of the film is yet to be announced, but fans can hardly wait to see this beloved tale retold in a live-action format.
