After creating and running Saturday Night Live for five seasons, Lorne Michaels walked away from the sketch comedy to work on other TV projects. As a result, the show’s sixth season, which ran from 1980 to 1981, turned out to be an amazingly turbulent year for the creatives on SNL. Although much of the disorder ensued behind the scenes, there were some on-screen changes that rendered the show’s comedy forgettable. So forgettable, in fact, that people rarely bring up any moments from this season at all unless they’re talking about how bad it was.
