2017 has already proved to be a pretty good year for the video game industry, with lots of quality titles on the market with more coming in the near future. Among those comes a few titles with a decidedly devilish amount of gore and brutality. While it may be a little early for Halloween, it’s never too soon to enjoy a good bloodbath in your games. Here are the top 5 goriest games of 2017 so far (in no particular order).
Despite a rather unconventional production method, Friday the 13th: The Game delivers everything you’d expect from a game titled after one of the most prolific horror franchises in history. With that right combination of 80’s cheese and buckets upon buckets of blood and guts, it has what it takes to make you really feel like a camper out on Crystal Lake or if you’re lucky, the killer himself.
The original Outlast was an unexpected hit from day 1, taking the almost cliche premise of “man stuck in an asylum” to new heights no one really thought possible anymore. While the sequel may fall short in several ways compared to the original, one area it certainly doesn’t skimp on is the brutality. If you’re the demented soul who thought the original was a bit too tame for your tastes, one look at the burned baby pit (yes, that’s really in this game) should sell you wholeheartedly on this one.
In a lot of ways, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a return to form for the series that had many fans of the classic installments pretty burnt out as it progressively focused more on the run-and-gun action as opposed to scares. RE7, though, is in no way lacking in blood and guts horror. Taking some atmospheric queues from its longtime rival Silent Hill, the game ups the ante of a traditional haunted house scenario reminiscent of the first Resident Evil with a cast of immortal cannibals and mold monsters as our villains. While it starts to overstay its welcome by the final third, what it never lacks is chunky, disgusting violence and visceral gore.
Any game that markets itself as “the worlds bloodiest roguelike first-person shooter” better be willing to back that up. Lucky for us, STRAFE delivers on that promise in spades. Set in a futuristic world full of sci-fi monsters, you’ll have to have tuned your reflexes to the max in order to ensure that the blood and guts coating every inch of the walls and ceiling is only your enemies’ and not your own.
Unlike the other games on this list, Agony by Madmind Studio hasn’t yet come out save for a short demo available online. Even so, that has more than earned it a spot on this list all by itself. Agony does what no other game has ever managed to truly do, and that makes you feel like you’ve actually gone to Hell. Like stepping into a Hieronymus Bosch painting, Agony delivers a truly unforgettable and visceral experience of traversing Hell, rendered in such painful detail as to show every one of the lacerations on the flesh of the tortured souls.
