Mid-summer 2018 is so hot it’s sizzling. It’s a great time to settle down with an ice cold brew in one hand and the mouse in the other as you browse and click for the best of Netflix. If you’re an online sports bettor, this month you can make a sure bet that Entertainment with a capital E will cross the line first. All you have to do is check out the movie streaming menu and select one of the top 5 titles coming to Netflix in August.
What are your options? Well, there’s a smattering of nineties slapstick, a fair dose of the Wild West and the tempestuous biographical tales of two very different billionaires; one an eccentric recluse and the other a big man in a black rubber suit! Here’s our selection of the flicks you can enjoy indoors as the outdoor temperatures soar:
If you’re into heart-stopping cat and mouse thrillers ‘No Country for Old Men’ is destined to trigger a spike on your heart rate monitor. It’s a contemporary western set in the badlands of Mexico and Texas. As with all great Westerns, there’s a gun touting killer, a hapless hunter who stumbles across a drug deal gone wrong and a briefcase bulging with $2 million in cash.
It’s a cracker of a movie that has all the ingredients to keep you glued to the screen. You’ll encounter a ‘purty’ little wife who’s really baiting on a hook and a steely-eye sheriff who’s determined to track, trace and ensnare the men and the money. The cast features Josh Brolin as the money-hungry hunter Llewellyn Moss, Javier Bardem as the merciless hitman Anton Chigurh and Tommy Lee Jones as Sheriff Ed Bell.
‘No Country for Old Men’ bagged four Oscars at the 2008 Academy Awards including the Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Bardem’s gritty role as the unconstrained killer. The film generated more than $170 million at the box office and is rated one of the best movies of our time!
Starring Leonardo Di Caprio as the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes, ‘The Aviator’ is an epic drama that traces the extraordinary accomplishments of the mentally flawed tycoon. It focuses on Hughes’ most productive years when he was not only producing Hollywood movies and sealing multi-million dollar deals with the military but designing and manufacturing unique aircraft.
As the playboy movie producer, Hughes was involved with the Hollywood celebrities of the day. You’ll meet the divine Katharine Hepburn played by Cate Blanchett as well as a coterie of sexy stars that include Ava Gardner and Jean Harlow, with Kate Beckinsale and Gwen Stefani in the roles.
Aviation nuts will appreciate the beautiful vintage and replica planes that make an appearance throughout the film – a Sikorsky S-38 Amphibian, Lockheed Constellation and the legendary ‘Spruce Goose’ or Hughes H-4 Hercules. ‘The Aviator’ won five Academy Awards, banked more than $214 million at the box office and is a wonderfully entertaining movie that’ll appeal equally to men and women!
‘Clerks’ is a cult black and white indie comedy that reached fame and notoriety in the late 1990s. It tracks a day in the lives of two witless store clerks, Dante Hicks and Randall Graves. It’s a slapstick movie with hilarious scenes that explore really off-beat subject matter – unintentional necrophilia, death, fist fights and reconciliation.
With a shoestring budget, ‘Clerks’ was basically shot in a convenience store and video outlet. If you want a few good chuckles to look out for the gormless Jay and Silent Bob, they’re sure to induce a giggle or two. ‘Clerks’ may be a low budget production that’s almost a quarter of a century old but it still has the sheer audacity to make you laugh out loud!
Set in 1892 in the American West ‘Hostiles’ features Christian Bale as a reluctant US cavalry officer who is ordered to escort an old Cheyenne Indian chief back to his tribal lands in Montana. It’s a conventional Western that opens with a particularly gory scene of a young settler family being murdered by marauding Apache Indians.
There are terrifying ambush scenes, epic abduction scenes and a couple of really evocative scenes that bring a tear to the eye. You’ll encounter a motley crew of tough and nuggety men – and a few women – who team up with Captain Joseph Blocker as he guides his nemesis, Chief Yellow Hawk to a final resting place.
‘Hostiles’ made quite a splash at the box office in 2017 generating $35 million in ticket sales worldwide. Along with Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike plays the role of Rosalee, the sole survivor of the family massacre and Wes Studi is Chief Yellow Hawk.
‘Batman Begins’ is the first film in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. It features Christian Bale as the crime-fighting superhero and Katie Holmes as his childhood sweetheart. It’s the caped hero’s origin story and ranges from his parent’s cold-blooded murder to his epic battles against the evil villains Scarecrow and Ras’ al Ghul.
You’ll be transported to exotic destinations, watch in despair as Batman ingests a fear-inducing hallucinogenic drug and rise in triumph as he protects the unsuspecting people of Gotham City from the nefarious antics of his arch-rivals. ‘Batman Begins’ is the best there is in terms of sheer entertainment!
