HBO’s hit anthology series True Detective season 4 is in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The report revealed that a new season is being developed, but without creator Nic Pizzolatto at the helm of it. Issa Lopez is set to write a script for the new season, and would also direct the pilot of what is tentatively titled True Detective: Night Country. It was also revealed that Barry Jenkins was attached to the series as an executive producer.
The fourth season of the show will mark the first time that Pizzolatto would not be attached to the series that he helped create, although THR did note that he would likely still be credited as an executive producer. Following the finale of the third season of True Detective in 2020, Pizzolatto reportedly met with HBO executives and mutually agreed to part ways, with Pizzolatto later inking an overall deal with FX in 2021.
True Detective started in 2014, with its first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and earning rave reviews. Its last season aired in 2019 and starred Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, and Ray Fisher.
