What to Do in Atlanta When You Don’t Know a Soul

If you’re visiting the Peach State, there’s a good chance you’ll end up in Atlanta. The city is the most-visited destination in Georgia. More than 50 million visitors a year go there.

Some people are visiting friends or family members. But if you’re traveling solo or just moved there, there’s no need to worry. The city has plenty to keep you busy.

Figuring out what to do in Atlanta requires a bit of finesse. Whether you’re there for a weekend or for good, we can help. Read on for four of the best things to do in Atlanta.

Visit the Aquarium

California sea lions and African penguins don’t care if you’re alone or part of a group. That’s part of what makes them a good company when you visit the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta.

The aquarium is about entertaining visitors, of course. But it also cares a lot about conservation and research. You’ll learn a lot without feeling like you’re going to school.

Tickets are cheaper when you buy online. You’ll also save money if you get there before 11 a.m., so plan to hit up the aquarium after breakfast.

Learn Some History

There are several things that make Atlanta historical, including The Burning of Atlanta during the Civil War. But the city’s most important figure of the last 100 years has to be Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

King grew up in Atlanta, and he was also buried there after his assassination in 1968. Yet you’ll learn a lot more about him than the way he died, as you can tour his childhood home.

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park is a great way to occupy a half-day or even a whole day. And it’s free, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your wallet.

Dine on Great Southern Food

All that history has a way of working up an appetite. You have no shortage of mouthwatering options in Atlanta, regardless of if you want barbecue or Cajun food.

Fox Brothers BBQ on DeKalb Avenue is one of the legendary barbecue places to visit in Atlanta for a reason. It often has a long wait. But once you taste menu items like pulled pork and brisket, you’ll understand why.

There’s plenty of flavor, but what if you want something a little hotter? Head to Richards’ Southern Fried in the Old Fourth Ward. Try the Richards’ Hot chicken if you’re feeling brave, or the chicken and waffles if you’re not.

Make Your Escape (Room)

Getting locked in a room with strangers may not top your list of Atlanta things to do. But it should be on the list because it’s a great way to both have fun and meet people.

You can pretend you’re pulling off a museum heist or escaping a runaway train at escape room venues like Breakout Games. If you really want to get scared, go through a fake kidnapping.

Whatever scenario you choose, you’ll be sure to get your heart rate going. Your brain will also get a nice workout.
